This week we are profiling Thomas Michael, CEO of Michael Management Corporation. Learn more about some of the most important trends that Tom sees in the SAP training space.
How did you get your start with SAP and SAP Controlling?
I went straight from college into the SAP consulting world in Germany in the early 90s…the beginning of the heyday of SAP. Very early on I made the – more or less – conscious decision to specialize in an area as opposed to be a generalist. That’s how I ended up becoming an expert in Asset Accounting – which, of course, is closely related to the Controlling module.
What is one of the most important trends that you see currently in SAP Controlling?
In my work I deal a lot with training issues – both for end-users and also for IT folks. The strongest trend we currently see if the shift away from traditional classroom training towards eLearning, not just for Controlling but all SAP areas across the board.
In your opinion, why does SAP Controlling matter?
The FI module is all about external financial reporting, meeting statutory requirements. It shows if the company made a profit or not – but it does not show how the company made it. In other words, the CO module is critical when it comes to maximizing the profitability of the company.
How do you stay on top of Controlling topics? What resources do you regularly use?
As a consultant I have the advantage of being surrounded by other expert consultants, which fosters a collaborative environment of sharing expertise and experiences.
What was your most important take away from Controlling 2013?
It was a great conference that really aimed at providing a general atmosphere of communal learning and sharing. I’m looking forward to this year’s conference!
Where is your favorite place to vacation and why?
I travel a lot and have been to a lot of places around the world…while I have many favorites my all-time favorite place to go is Hamburg, Germany – my hometown.
