Birgit Oettinger presenting SAP S/4HANA Cloud overhead management developments in 2025

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is introducing new capabilities for overhead management designed to simplify reporting, allocations, settlement, and period-end processing.

These innovations include Review Booklets for cost center and project reporting, Universal Allocation, streamlined project settlement, event-based processing, and improvements to intercompany CO postings. Together, they support SAP's move toward simpler, more integrated Management Accounting processes in the public cloud.

In this session, Birgit Oettinger, SAP Product Manager for Management Accounting, discusses:

  • New strategies for cost center and project reporting, including Review Booklets
  • Improvements for project settlement
  • AI features planned for Universal Allocation at the time of the 2025 presentation

SAP Review Booklets: Real-Time Reporting in S/4HANA Cloud

SAP Review Booklets provide predefined, real-time reports that combine SAP Analytics Cloud capabilities with a Fiori user experience. Instead of navigating multiple reporting tiles, controllers can use consolidated Review Booklets with YTD results, period comparisons, plan-versus-actual analysis, and KPIs/statistical key figures.

Review Booklets analyze data through analytical queries and provide filtering, drilldown, and navigation to supporting applications. Available features depend on the booklet and release. Cell and page commenting require supported data sources, configuration, and authorizations; they are not available automatically in every booklet.

Analytics specialists can use the Review Booklet Designer in Manage KPIs and Reports to create custom booklets or adapt supported content.

2026 update: SAP documents AI-assisted analytical business insights for supported Review Booklets, including Cost Centers. These features provide guided analysis and natural-language summaries. Availability depends on the release, business role, authorizations, and potentially additional entitlement.

SAP Universal Allocation in S/4HANA Cloud

SAP Universal Allocation (UA) consolidates multiple allocation methods into a single framework integrated with the Universal Journal. In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, Universal Allocation supports allocations for cost centers, profit centers, and Margin Analysis.

Two usability improvements make Universal Allocation easier to analyze and manage:

Universal Allocation analysis in SAP S/4HANA Cloud

  • Allocation Flow visualization shows sources, targets, and amounts with interactive lines you can click to see accounts, cycles, and totals—great for explaining “what moved where.”
  • Manage Allocation Changes compares versions and highlights additions in green and removals in red.

Use the Migrate Cycles to Universal Allocation job template in Schedule Overhead Accounting Jobs to migrate supported predecessor cycles. SAP’s documented scope includes KSU cost-center actual overhead allocation cycles. Run a test migration first and review the results in Monitor Cycle Migration; confirm support for your release before migrating other cycle types.

Event-Based Settlement in SAP S/4HANA Cloud

SAP S/4HANA Cloud increasingly uses event-based processing to reduce period-end activities. For projects, maintenance orders, and service orders, SAP is introducing capabilities to simplify the maintenance and processing of settlement rules. With Universal Parallel Accounting (UPA) available in the public cloud, settlement can also run by ledger, supporting local and group accounting requirements.

With event-based settlement configured, postings to an investment project are settled directly to its assigned asset under construction (AuC). Settlement from the AuC to completed assets remains a separate settlement-run step. SAP recommends evaluating periodic settlement for large, complex, or long-running investment projects.

Intercompany CO Postings in SAP S/4HANA Cloud

Intercompany allocations, repostings, and activity allocations must maintain balanced accounting across company codes. SAP S/4HANA Cloud provides configuration options to determine how clearing postings are handled for each account type.

Intercompany billing may still be required for taxes and open items. However, when entities belong to the same tax group or billing is handled externally, the accounting treatment can be aligned with the organization's requirements.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition: Clean Core and Continuous Innovation

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition follows a clean-core approach designed to simplify configuration and support continuous innovation. Compared with on-premise environments, the public cloud provides more standardized processes and configuration options while delivering new capabilities through regular releases and opt-in features.

Note: Some capabilities discussed are forward-looking and subject to change. Don’t base purchase decisions solely on planned features.

Summary

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition continues to expand its Management Accounting capabilities with Review Booklets, Universal Allocation, event-based settlement, and intercompany CO processing. These developments can simplify reporting, allocations, settlement, and period-end processes while supporting more standardized finance and controlling operations.

For background on the wider SAP S/4HANA approach, see Overhead Controlling in S/4HANA. Available processes and applications vary by edition and release.

Glossary

Asset Under Construction (AuC)

An asset used to collect capitalizable costs while an investment project is in progress, before those costs are transferred to completed assets.

Clean Core

An approach to keeping an SAP system upgradeable by using standard processes and supported extension methods.

Event-Based Settlement

Settlement triggered by individual business postings. For an investment project configured for event-based settlement, costs are settled directly to its assigned asset under construction; settlement to completed assets remains a separate step.

Review Booklet

An analytical application that brings related reports and key performance indicators (KPIs) together for review and analysis.

Universal Allocation

SAP’s framework for allocating costs and other values between supported senders and receivers. Available allocation contexts and methods depend on the SAP S/4HANA edition and release.

Universal Journal

The integrated accounting data model in SAP S/4HANA that brings Financial Accounting and Controlling actual line items together in table ACDOCA.

Universal Parallel Accounting (UPA)

An SAP S/4HANA accounting approach that supports consistent ledger-specific valuation and processing across supported financial and management accounting processes for multiple accounting principles.
